The Menteur glossary
The words of Menteur, from call to pile, as the game screen uses them. Each one points to a specific rule: if anything is unclear, the rules page has the final say.
- Call
- What a play states: a number of cards and a rank, shown to the whole table — “Called: 2 × R”. The number is always true; the rank is the one the game sets, and it alone can lie.
- Bullet
- What an accusation costs. Each player receives three at the start of the game; shouting “Liar!” spends one, given back if the accusation was right and lost otherwise. With no bullets left, you can’t accuse anyone any more.
- Final ranking
- The order shown at the end of the game. The winner comes first; the others follow by the number of cards they have left, from fewest to most. In a tie, the player seated earliest in the turn order ranks ahead.
- Challenge
- What follows a shout of “Liar!” The cards from the most recent play are turned over, and only those. The loser picks up the pile; the winner starts again on an empty pile, calling the same rank.
- Final play
- The play that empties a player’s hand. It doesn’t win the game for them outright: the next player can no longer play; they either challenge or let it stand, and the others can still shout “Liar!” If it isn’t exposed as a lie, the game is over.
- Let it stand
- The move made by the player who comes after a final play, when they choose not to challenge it. It confirms the win of the player who emptied their hand, and the game ends. If they do nothing for forty-five seconds, the table lets it stand for them.
- Lie
- A play in which at least one card isn’t of the called rank. One is enough: three kings and a queen played under the call “4 × R” are a lie. It is punished only if someone challenges it.
- Liar!
- The shout that challenges the most recent play, and the button that shouts it. Any other player can let it out, even when it isn’t their turn, as long as the next player hasn’t played yet, and provided they still have a bullet. Only the first shout counts.
- Play
- What the player whose turn it is does: one to four cards from their hand, played face down on the pile, under the rank the game sets. You can’t pass your turn.
- Pick up
- To take the whole pile in the middle into your hand after a challenge: it falls to the liar if they lied, to the accuser if they were wrong. It is the only way to get cards back, and what keeps a game going.
- Expected rank
- The rank the next play must call, shown in the middle of the table. It follows the order from ace to king, then goes back to ace; after a challenge, it stays the one that was just challenged.
- Pile
- The cards played face down in the middle of the table since the start of the game, or since the last challenge. Nobody sees what it holds: the screen shows only how many cards there are. Whoever loses a challenge picks it up in full.
The words of the site — pearls, leaderboard, progress — are shared by every game, but for now a game of Menteur earns no experience, no pearls and no place on the leaderboard. They are defined in the general glossary.
