Président rules: how to play

A shedding game played in rounds: beat the last play, empty your hand first, and hold on to the title of President in the next round.

The order of the cards

From lowest to highest: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king, ace, 2. Suits don’t matter.

This order never changes during the game. At some tables, four of a kind reverses it; not at this one.

The deal

All fifty-two cards are dealt; depending on the number of players, some receive one more. In the first round, the player holding the 3 of clubs leads.

Playing and following

The player who leads plays a single card, a pair, three of a kind or four of a kind, always of the same rank. To follow, you must play the same number of cards, of a rank at least as strong.

A player who can’t follow, or doesn’t want to, passes. Passing doesn’t take you out of the trick: you can play again if the turn comes back to you.

“… or nothing”

When a player plays the same rank as the play before, the next player no longer chooses the rank: they must play that rank, or pass.

Closing the trick

A 2 closes the trick at once, since nothing can beat it. Four of a kind closes it too, whatever its rank. Otherwise, the trick closes when all the other players have passed since the last play.

Whoever played last leads the next trick.

The end of a round

Players go out one by one as they empty their hands, and the round ends when only one player is still holding cards.

The first player out becomes President, the second Vice-President; the last and the second-to-last receive the two least enviable titles at the table. With three players, only the President and the last player have a role.

The card exchange

From the second round on, the exchange happens by itself, at the deal: the last player of the previous round gives their two best cards to the President, who gives back their two weakest. With four players or more, the second-to-last and the Vice-President swap one card the same way.

Nobody chooses the cards given, and the last player of the previous round leads.

Points and the end of the game

At the end of each round, each player scores as many points as there are players who went out after them: the President scores the most, the last player scores none.

The game is played over five rounds, and the highest total wins.
